DOLLS & TOYS
Over the past years a large number of antique dolls and toys have been contributed to Haywood Hall. Part of the collection is displayed off the master bedroom in the room that was the original nursery in what became a closet installed many years after the house was built.

The display area was originally created as a closet much later in the house's history, but when the house was being restored to its original use, the North Carolina Division of Archives and History advised against removing it and suggested that it be used as a display area. (Initially, Haywood Hall had no closets because the tax laws at that time followed those of the old country where buildings were taxed based upon the number of rooms, and closets counted as rooms!)

The remainder of the collection is in the original “wine cellar” which is located off the original nursery and behind the master bedroom. In the early days the master of the house kept his wine near his chambers so the servants wouldn’t get into the wine after the master retired for the evening!

Look for the complete inventory, including photographs and the provenance for each doll and toy, when it becomes available on this site.

FURNITURE
As Haywood Hall was continuously occupied by three generations of the Haywood family for 175 years, there is an eclectic mix of furnishings in the house. Mrs. Stearns, the last owner, was an antique collector and much of her collection remains. There have been generous donations of pieces that were original to the house, from Haywood family members and from benefactors around the country. The resulting collection creates the sense of a warm and comfortable historic home, rather than that of a formal museum.

The complete inventory, including a photographs and the provenance of each piece will be available in the future.

PORTRAITS & PAINTINGS
There is an very large collection of Haywood family portraits hung through out Haywood Hall. All the generations living in the house are represented, from Treasurer John Haywood (1755-1827) to Mrs. Mary Fowle Haywood Stearns (1880-1977). There is also a collection of landscapes and still-lives that grace the walls of the house. Some of these belonged to Mrs. Stearn and others were donated by benefactors from around the country.

The complete inventory, including a photographs and the provenance of each piece will be available in the future.
